INTRODUCTION When Ellen wakes up she is hungry but has to go to school without food because her family doesn't have enough. When she gets on the bus she sees everyone. They are all comfortably full or are eating breakfast. They're eating bagels, bananas, granola bars. It looks really good to her and she wishes she had one too. When she gets off the bus and walks into school she sees the breakfast program, everyone there in eating. Today they are eating bran muffins, her favorite. But she walks into school with an empty stomach until lunch. In Vermont there are over 19,000 children like Ellen whose families have trouble coming up with enough food to put on the table. When one of those children wakes up to find their kitchen empty and has to go to school with hunger gnawing at their stomachs, I doubt it will surprise most of you that they won't perform as well as the kids who have eaten enough. If kids have enough money for one meal studies show that they will pick lunch over breakfast. So for all of their morning classes they are preoccupied by their lack of food...
